Privacy Policy

Last updated 19 July 2026. The short version: Polaris is local-first. Your code, your documentation, and your search queries never leave your machine.

What Polaris never sees

Indexing and search run entirely on your computer. We have no ability to read, and never receive:

  • your source code or documentation;
  • your Polaris index or its embeddings;
  • your search queries or their results;
  • anything about the projects you use Polaris on.

There is no telemetry, usage tracking, or crash reporting in the Polaris binary.

What we do collect

If you buy Polaris Pro

Checkout is handled by Polar, who act as Merchant of Record. Polar collects your email address, billing details, and payment information. We never see or store your card details. From Polar we receive your email address and your subscription status, which is what we need to issue and renew your licence.

Licence activation and renewal

Your licence key contains your email address, signed by us so the Polaris binary can verify it offline. When you activate a licence, and roughly once a day thereafter, Polaris contacts our licence service to check the subscription is still active and to fetch a refreshed key. That request sends your licence key; our server logs record the request and your IP address. The daily check is what lets access lapse when a subscription ends.

Downloads and updates

When you run an update, Polaris asks our service for a time-limited download link. This involves the same licence check and log entries as above.

This website

We use Swetrix for analytics. It is cookieless and does not track individuals across sites or build a profile of you — which is why this site has no cookie banner. If you join the waitlist, that form is hosted by Tally and your email address is stored there until we contact you or you ask us to delete it.

Who processes your data

  • Polar — payments, invoicing, and tax
  • Swetrix — website analytics
  • Tally — waitlist form
  • Our hosting and storage providers — serving this site, the licence service, and release downloads

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.

Why we're allowed to hold it

Under the GDPR, we rely on performance of a contract for everything needed to sell you a licence and keep it working, on legal obligation for records we must keep for tax and accounting, and on legitimate interests for privacy-preserving analytics that tell us how the site is doing.

How long we keep it

Licence records are kept while your subscription is active and for as long afterwards as tax and accounting rules require. Server logs are kept for a short operational period and then rotated out. Waitlist entries are deleted on request.

Your rights

If you're in the EU, UK, or another region with similar law, you can ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, or restrict how we use it, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Email contact@guillaumegirard.xyz and we'll respond within one month.

You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

Polaris is a developer tool and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.

Contact

The data controller is Guillaume Girard. For any privacy question or request, email contact@guillaumegirard.xyz. See also our Terms of Service.
